The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor National Heritage Area has partnered with the Brainerd Institute Heritage located in Chester, SC to curate an interactive cultural experience that will bring to life historical traditions and heritage! This event will feature some of our renowned culture keepers including Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters, Aunt Pearlie Sue and The Gullah Kinfolk and Gullah Traveling Theatre, and Actress & Artist Natalie Daise of the 90’s show “Gullah Gullah Island”!
💐💐History💐💐 The Brainerd Institute was an elite freedmen’s school formed for African Americans in 1866 after Reconstruction by the Presbyterian Church.
Poet, cultural activist, and mother of actress Phylicia Ayers-Allen Rashad and director and choreographer Debbie Allen, Dr. Vivian Ayers Allen is a member of the last graduating class of Brainerd Institute in 1939. The Brainerd Estate was purchased by Rashad for her mother with the desire to restore the building to its’ full operational use and convert it into a cultural arts center, with a focus on teaching and learning!
